Something About Identity

This morning while I was reading Google News I came across the story of a young girl who was kidnapped and assaulted by a transient in British Columbia. What struck me about this story was the fact they actually published the name and picture of the little girl. Take a look at this capture I took from a Canadian news website (I edited the picture and name):

Directly to the right of the sentence "The Judge ordered a publication ban on the 11 year-olds identity" is not only a picture of the girl but the girls identity! What the heck? Who can explain this?

I don't know why the judge issued a publication ban. Then girl's name and picture were all over the news for days after she went missing, and after they found her.

Because now it's officially a legal matter for the courts. It involves a crime against a minor, and legally her identity needs to be protected. The judge is simply applying the appropriate laws, as silly as it seems now.

It's sad because not only has the girl had to live through the ordeal but now everyone knows who she is. It's even more sad because they don't seem to be releasing the name of the man involved with the case.
