Something About Being Sedated

I've had the same song in my head for the past few weeks now. As Thursday aproaches the song is getting louder and more frequent. I still love Korea, however:

[chorus]:Twenty-twenty-twenty-four hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, no where to go, oh
I wanna be sedated

Just get me to the airport, put me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go insane
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my brain
Oh no oh oh oh oh

[chorus]

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go insane
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my brain
Oh no oh oh oh oh

[chorus]

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me to the show
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go loco
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my toes
Oh no oh oh oh oh

[chorus]

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me to the show
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go loco
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my toes
Oh no oh oh oh oh

Ba-ba-baba, baba-ba-baba, I wanna be sedated
Ba-ba-baba, baba-ba-baba, I wanna be sedated
Ba-ba-baba, baba-ba-baba, I wanna be sedated
Ba-ba-baba, baba-ba-baba, I wanna be sedated

Something About Fog Trucks

I was just reading that Winnipeg has introduced "Fog Trucks" (trucks that spew insecticide resulting in a fog effect) to combat the West Nile Virus. Many Winnipeg residents took to the street in protest. Now that the Korean rainy season is in full swing the fog trucks have also begun driving the streets. The difference is that Koreans actually like the fog trucks. Most Korean adults tell me that when they were children they chased the fog trucks in an attempt to get lost in the fog. I was reading in Hillary Clinton's autobiography that she too chased fog trucks as a child. I must say I can't see the attraction. The insecticide from these trucks is disgusting and the smell lingers on well after the trucks have left the area. In a recent encounter I had just dropped my high school students off when I heard the truck coming down the street (they are very loud). It was hot out and all four windows of my car were down. The truck passed right beside me before I could get the windows up. I held my breath for as long as I could but eventually I had to take a breath. It took a good 5 minutes before I could even see well enough to drive. The worst encounter I've had with a fog truck was my first year in Daejeon. Me and some friends were walking home from a restaurant when the fog truck drove past us. We didn't hear this one coming. I have never felt so dirty in my entire life.

Something About Foreheads

When I first saw this picture I thought the son had written on his mom's forehead while she was sleeping. Actually, it's a tattoo. Kari Smith sold her forehead to goldenpalace.com for $10,000 US. She plans to spend the money on her son's private education. I couldn't find out how long she needs to keep the tattoo. Can you imagine going to a wedding or a funeral with that tattooed on your head? Getting a loan from a bank? Going to a job interview? I think I would have asked for more than $10,000.

Something About Tim Horton's

As everyone probably knows by now, Karla Holmoka remarked that the first thing she wanted to do out of prison was drink an iced cappuccino from Tim Horton's. There is something fishy about this comment. Holmoka has been in prison since 1993 while Tim Horton's didn't introduce the iced cappuccino until 1999. How does she even know what an iced cappuccino from Tim Horton's tastes like? Did the prison guards make special "Tim Runs" for the inmates once in a while? If someone is in prison for a triple murder I don't think they should have the niceties of law abiding cititizens, even if it is just an iced cappuccino from Tim Horton's.

Something About The News

This morning on CNN International they reported hourly about Karla Holmoka being released from prison. Not exactly the news story you want to get Canada on the map. Another news story came close to making me sick to my stomach. On Monday a guy from Japan won the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest. Takeru Kobayashi ate 49 hot dogs (including bun) in 12 minutes, giving him the Yellow Mustard Belt for the fifth straight year. What made me sick was the technique he uses. First he breaks the hot dog in half, then he dips both halves in water before eating them. I couldn't eat 1 soggy hot dog bun let alone 49 of them. Gross.

Something About Canada Day

Happy Canada Day!

Something About 12:29 a.m.

On Thursday night we had a thunderstorm that kept me up way past midnight. At about 12:30 I had given up trying to get to sleep and decided to listen to "In Your Honor", the new Foo Fighters c.d. . I try to keep up with the news over here but somehow I missed the fact The Foo Fighters even had a new disc (a double one at that). I've been a Foo Fighters fan ever since I first saw them at Edgefest '97 and then again at Woodstock '99 (they dominated at Edgefest). It was actually on the June 29th episode of "The Daily Show with John Stewart" that I first heard about the new c.d. . Stewart mentioned the disc a number of times on his show so my expectations were running high. The first disc was so-so. I think it's one of those c.d.'s that grows on people over time. While I was impressed with a few of the songs (No Way Back; Best of You; Resolve) the rest of them didn't do anything for me. Like I said, I hadn't heard very much about this double c.d. so you can imagine my surprise when I listened to the second disc. While the first c.d. was typical Foo Fighters rock the second was straight pop. Yikes. The only good pop song The Foo Fighters put out was "The Big Me." Listening to the second c.d. made me sleepy enough to go back to bed. In my opinion the only hard rock band that can pull of both rock and slow pop is the now defunct Smashing Pumpkins (Billy Corgan said he wants to get the band back together). The Foo Fighters do a much better job rocking than popping.
*The song playing is "No Way Back."
