Something About Renewals

Does it seem strange that a lot my posts have to do with television? It seems that way anyway. I was reading online that Scrubs and 7th Heaven have been renewed for next season. Scrubs was a given, but 7th Heaven? I admit I like this show and watch it on a weekly basis, but this show has been cancelled! The final two episodes this season are named "Goodbye" & "And Thankyou" respectively. It turns out it was the WB's decision to cut the show because of high production costs. Starting in September 2006 the WB will now be called the CW Network. This new network has said they want to renew 7th Heaven for at least one more season. Interesting. As for Scrubs, a strange situation is brewing. While Scrubs draws a lot of viewers and, in my opinion, is having it's best season yet, NBC doesn't feel like renewing it for another season. Apparently the show will jump to ABC. Given that My Name is Earl is the only other hit comedy the network airs it puzzles me as to why NBC would dump Scrubs.

Something About Digging a Hole

Okay, I'm a little pissed. Yah, I said it... pissed. There are so little dramas worth watching on television and Prison Break is one of them. It is such a fresh relief from the whole lawyer-doctor-family guy dramas that are usually found on t.v. . The story is a little complex, but here's the jist of it:

  • Brother is framed for murder and is sentenced to death
  • Younger brother designed the prison where older brother is being held
  • Younger brother tattoos a map of the underground workings of the prison on his back
  • Younger brother robs a bank as to be incarcerated in same prison as older brother
  • When in jail, younger brother begins work digging a hole from the back of his cell's toilet to the outside world
  • Once complete, younger brother will escape with older brother (along with the 10 or so inmates that found out about the plan and now insist to be included with the breakout)

Okay it sounds stupid, but it really is a good show. Well I must say that after watching the "Key" episode I was so flustered I had to sit on the can for a while. For some reason Michael (younger brother) told the prisons biggest snitch about their escape plan. The snitch was being abused by his cell mate and Michael felt bad for him. He told the snitch he could come along on the prison break if he agreed to help out. Well the snitch went straight to the warden and told him everything. At the end of the episode the warden discovered the hole under the guards room floor. Michael and his buddies have been digging that hole for 19 episodes! The hole is the key to their escape! Really, Fox, please don't let this series go to pot. I'm begging you! I read online that there will be a second season; I hope they won't waste it digging another freaking hole!

UPDATE---------------------->

Okay, I had some time to sleep this episode off. I was under the impression that this series would only last one season; many people thought Fox used it as a filler so they could shoot more episodes of 24. With the hole being discovered it does leave the door open for a second season which, like I said before, there will be. The series has two key plots: An FBI cover-up and a prison escape. While there will have to be a new spin on the escape idea the cover-up doesn't go away. The discovery of the hole is bad for the escape but good for a second season.

Something About Change

This morning Venus did something she hasn't done in over a year: she climbed up onto my shoulder. As you can see from the pictures she has grown quite a bit. She has dermititus and, so she doesn't lick the cream I have to put on her paw, she has to wear an Elizabethan. Sorry for the grumpy look on my face. It was a spur of the moment picture that I took at 8 o'clock this morning. I didn't sleep well because I have a cold. The next two pictures are of my niece Julia, with the first being taken Easter 2005 and the latter Easter 2006.

Something About Dinner

Say what you want about Koreans eating dog meat, I think Tom Cruise takes the cake with his appetite. He told reporters that after girlfriend Katie Holmes has her baby he will eat it's placenta. I can't find out if this has to do with his belief in Scientology or if it's just Tom being Tom. Personally I think dear Tom wants M:i:III to succeed so badly that he will do anything for publicity. You sure know how to pick 'em, Katie! First he kills Oprah, now he wants to eat your babies placenta!

Something About Lyrics

Recently VH1 conducted an online poll in the UK to find which song lyrics listeners liked the best. Here are the top 5 selections:

1. U2 - One. "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers."
2. The Smiths - How Soon is Now? "So you go, and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die."
3. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit. "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us."
4. Bob Marley - Redemption Song. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds, have no fear for atomic energy,'cause none of them can stop the time."
5. Coldplay - Yellow. "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you."

While I can agree with Nirvana being on the list, I don't know about the others. Sure "One" is a good song, but best lyrics? Not in my opinion. Here's Mike's list of top lyrics:

1. The Tragically Hip-Boots or Hearts. "Fingers and toes, fingers and toes, forty things we share. Forty-one if you include, the fact that we don't care."
2. Rage Against the Machine-Township Rebellion. "Why stand on a silent platform? Fight the war, @$%& the norm."
3. The Smashing Pumpkins-Landslide. "I saw my reflection on a snow-covered hill, then a landslide brought it down.
4. Hoobastank-The Reason. "I've found a reason for me, to change who I used to be. A reason to start over new, and the reason is you."
5. Radiohead-Just. "You do it to yourself, just you, that's why it hurts."

I'd add more but it took me to long to think of these ones. Feel free to comment on your own list.

Something About Holidays

I read about Google's new online calendar service on Thursday and promptly signed up. At first I was a bit disappointed with the features, but after some playing around with it for a while, I think it's pretty cool. Pretty much it's just a simple calendar that you can personalize with events and appointments. What I like about it is it's ability to over-lap different calendars. For example, the calendar I created includes Canadian holidays as well as South Korean Holidays. You can overlap as many calendars as you want, including those used by your friends. It also allows you to set alarms for certain events. Alarms can be in the form of an email, a pop-up, or audio. You can sign up here.

Something Abou "PDA"

When I was in university, "PDA" was a commonly used term. It has nothing to do with a hand-held device; it's an acronym for "Public Display of Affection." PDA was discouraged at my university. Sure, it was a Christian school, but really, who wants to see it? Tangerang, on the outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesia, has decided to ban any form of PDA. According to an Associated Press report, the town is considering legislation to ban the public activities of "constant lip-to-lip kissing for more than five minutes" as well as "opening each others' clothing." The penalty would be serving time in jail. My question is, who kisses for more than five minutes in public? Maybe it's because I live in a very conservative country, but the most PDA I see is hand holding and the occasional playing with hair. Even when soldiers say good-bye to their girlfriends at the train station it usually only involves a quick peck. 5 minutes of public kissing? I can't see the town making the rule unless it has already become an issue. If I lived in a town where couples all over the place were making out for 5 minutes or longer I would want some kind of law as well. I think jail time is taking this a bit far. But it would be nice if, as a community, someone would kindly ask the couple to "get a room." I'm sure if a young Korean couple held a make out session in the train station it wouldn't be long before some ajuma (old woman) knocked them on the head. Then there's the whole "opening each others' clothing" issue. Again, there shouldn't be a law against it, but there should be some moral sense of restraint. Get a room! How does the town of Tangerang plan to enforce this law? Will they have "PDA Police"? I can just see them pulling out a stop watch as soon as they see a couple start to kiss. I would be sick after the first 20 seconds of monitoring the couple.

Something About Humility

I thought that the last federal election would bring about some sense of humility within the Liberal party. As people we are supposed to learn from our mistakes, not repeat them. I guess the Liberal Party of Canada has chosen not to learn from their failure to win the election. The Throne speech put forward by the Conservative Party should have been no surprise to anyone. The points made, such as lower taxes and a different childcare initiative, were the exact same ideas the Conservatives ran with during the election. If a party runs on an election with certain promises, doesn't it make sense they would follow through with them? I guess as Canadians we've become accustomed to promises made during elections disappearing when the election is over. This is the mentality the Liberal's provided us with for so many years. Well, it turns out the Liberal's didn't like some points of Monday's speech.
"We will vigorously oppose this government if it acts
unilaterally to put forward legislation or adopts radical policies for which it
lacks a mandate," Bill Graham told Parliament.
It seems that the Liberal's still think they know what is best for Canada, even though they lost the election! Their loss should expose the fact that the majority of Canadians don't agree with Liberal policy! Why should the Conservatives be chastised for putting forth policy they said they would go with if elected? If Canadians were so opposed to these changes the Conservatives plan to make they would not have won the election.

Something About Spring

After a somewhat long and cold Winter, Spring has finally come to Korea. It was raining the past 4 days but this morning there is plenty of sunshine. The magnolias and cherry blossoms are out, and Nonsan has it's annual Strawberry Festival this weekend. To top things off, one of the Korean sports channels aired The Toronto Blue Jay's opening game (live) this morning. From what I watched, the Jay's look awesome this season. The score was 4-1 for the Jay's in the 6th when I turned it off. Nice hitting, nice running and the Rogers Center looked sold out! I can remember going to the opening game in 1995 and seeing the place half empty. Of course that was just after the strike. The downside to Spring is that the local farmers have started spreading manure on the fields. I guess you can't have it all.
